USHCC's Comments on Immigration from the State of the Union Address
The following comments were expressed by the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (USHCC) based on what the President said on immigration in his State of the Union Address:

While we praise the President’s bold efforts to bring about reform to our out-dated immigration system, we are concerned about any additional regulatory burden and penalties that may be placed on employers to enforce civil immigration laws. A majority of employers comply with immigration laws in good faith and should not be forced to be de facto “Immigration agents” to ensure the legality of all their employees.

The USHCC looks forward to working with the nation’s lawmaker’s on I.D. verification standards that place the majority of the enforcement burden on the government rather than small businesses. For example, 40 percent of workers rejected for employment with the Basic Pilot Extension Act verification system are actually eligible workers often confused due to surname mismatches or errors in the data. Those mismatches often affect the Hispanic community more than others.

Despite these concerns, the USHCC strongly supports the President’s vision for a permanent and comprehensive solution to the immigration debate. We also look forward to the President’s plan for a Temporary Guest Worker program as businesses will require an expansion in the available workforce to meet the demands of our growing economy.

We at HCCET are hopeful that the new Congress working in a bipartisan manner will be able to develop legislation that meets the immigration reform objectives that our President seeks, that incorporates the national security measures that are required, and that at the same time provides a permanent and comprehensive solution to the immigration situation that has been demanding special attention for a long time all over the country.
