Washington, DC – The U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (USHCC) today announced that the Honorable Carlos M. Gutierrez, U.S. Secretary of
Commerce, will participate and offer remarks as part of the 2008 USHCC
Legislative Conference. Themed, “Hispanic Business: Shaping
Tomorrow’s Policy,” the Legislative Conference is the nation’s
leading legislative forum for the Hispanic business community and will
take place in Washington, DC, March 11-13. Secretary Gutierrez’s
address during the Legislative Luncheon is slated for Thursday March
13th at the Washington Marriott. He is the first Hispanic to serve as
Secretary of Commerce in a Presidential Cabinet.
“Secretary Gutierrez has been instrumental in expanding international
markets for U.S. companies and elevating the profile of Hispanic
entrepreneurs in the global market,” said David C. Lizárraga, USHCC
Board Chair. “We are honored that Secretary Gutierrez will participate
in this year’s Legislative Conference and share his views on
international competitiveness that is crucial to the continued growth
and dynamism of Hispanic-owned business and U.S. business overall.”
Carlos M. Gutierrez was sworn into office on February 7, 2005, and is
the 35th Secretary of the U.S. Department of Commerce, the voice of
business in government. The former chairman of the board and chief
executive officer of Kellogg Company, Secretary Gutierrez is a core
member of President Bush’s economic team and oversees a diverse
Cabinet agency with some 40,000 workers and a $5.8 billion budget
focused on promoting American business at home and abroad.
The Legislative Conference brings together the nation's top business
owners, opinion leaders and key governmental and administration
officials for a three-day gathering to discuss the most pressing
legislative concerns of the nation’s largest and fastest growing
business segment, Hispanic entrepreneurs. Expanding hemispheric
relations and trade, telecommunications, energy efficiency, and federal
procurement opportunities are among the key issues that will receive
top billing at this year's Legislative Conference.
