HCCET joins the Big Read
For the second year in a row, the YWCA Knoxville received an NEA grant to plan and implement a month-long series of events surrounding a classic novel. Last year, more than 2,000 people participated in discussions on Harper Lee’s “To Kill a Mockingbird.” This October, we hope that even more people will read John Steinbeck’s “The Grapes of Wrath.” The Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of East Tennessee and HoLa-Hora Latina are pleased to announce their participation in this program.

9/27- Hispanic Heritage Festival (HOLA): 11 am - 7 pm
In a lead-up to The Big Read launch the following week, the YWCA will have a booth at the festival and will be handing out information and Spanish-language copies of "The Grapes of Wrath."

10/1- Knoxville Kick-off: The Big Read kicks off during the Market Square Farmers' Market with a celebration that includes a few words from Mayor Bill Haslam, Library director Larry Frank, YWCA executive director Marigail Mullin, music from Guy and Candie Carwawan, a performance from Tennessee Children's Dance Ensemble, free readers' guides, and free copies of "The Grapes of Wrath" to the first 75 readers. 12 pm

10/14- County and City Mayors; City County Building and on Community TV; 2:30 pm. Rossy Toledo, HCCET board member, will join this discussion.

10/25- Dr. Jaime Fernandez-Baca will be moderating a Discussion Group at the Cedar Bluff Library on October 25 at 1:00 p.m. Join us for a community conversation on the social justice issues related to The Grapes of Wrath, including poverty, hunger, migration and immigration, the environment, and connection to land.
