HCCET and HoLa Participate in the Gatlinburg 4th of July Parade and Receive Award
For 34 years Gatlinburg has kicked off America Independence Day celebration with the nation’s first parade which leads off at midnight. For the 2009 celebration, the actor David Keith was invited to lead the parade celebrating also the 75th anniversary of the opening of the Smoky Mountains National Park. Gatlinburg’s Department of Tourism and Special events headed by George Hawkins, with the assistance of Fidel Cantu, a Hispanic businessman, contacted the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of East Tennessee and invited them to prepare a float for the parade. HCCET accepted and asked HOLA, Hora Latina to assist with the project based on the organization’s past experiences planning cultural events. Two of the HCCET business members, Cisco and Fiesta Food Brokerage, joined the 2 organizations as financial sponsors. The group, Ballet Folklorico Tampico was invited to provide the music and dance component of the float that was decorated with the flags of the 23 Spanish speaking countries. Besides the folkloric ballet, several members of HCCET and HOLA were active participants on the colorful float. Recently, HCCET was informed that the float received the Most Entertaining Entry –the George Hawkins Award. Mr. Cantu, Mr. Hawkins and several staff members of Gatlinburg’s Department of Tourism and Special Events attended HCCET July’s networking event at Estelita’s Mexican Restaurant to present the award.
