15th Annual Free Flu Shot Saturday
Knoxville ~ Free flu shots will be given on Saturday, September 26th, from 8 a.m. to noon (while supplies last) at the following six area schools: 1) Austin East Magnet High School, 2) Farragut High School, 3) Halls High School, 4) West High School, 5) South Doyle Middle School, and 6) new location Carter High School.
The CDC states 226,000 people, on average, are hospitalized every year because of influenza and 36,000 die - mostly elderly, but the influenza vaccine can prevent the virus. The CDC recommends the vaccine for anyone who wants to reduce the likelihood of becoming ill with influenza or spreading influenza to others. Free Flu Shot Saturday not only reduces the impact of influenza to this community, it is the biggest annual fundraiser for the Knoxville News Sentinel Empty Stocking Fund, a charity providing 3,600 food baskets and toys for the underprivileged during the holidays this year.
Free Flu Shot Saturday is open to all, ages 4 and older. Donations are welcomed and benefit the Empty Stocking Fund, but are not required to receive the vaccine. Primary Sponsor of the News Sentinel Flu Shot program is Blue Cross BlueShield of Tennessee Health Foundation, along with donation and aid from Summit Medical Group, and the Knox Area Rotary Clubs.

Sábado de Vacunas Gratis Contra la Influenza
Knoxville ~ El sábado 26 de septiembre desde las 8 a.m. hasta el mediodía se ofrecerán vacunas gratis contra la influenza (hasta que se agoten) en las siguientes seis escuelas públicas: 1) Austin East Magnet High School, 2) Farragut High School, 3) Halls High School, 4) West High School, 5) South Doyle Middle School, y 6) Carter High School.
Los Centros para el Control y la Prevención de Enfermedades (CDC, por sus siglas en inglés) indican que un promedio de 226.000 personas son hospitalizadas anualmente debido a la influenza, y 36.000 de ellas mueren – la mayoría son personas de edad avanzada, pero la vacuna contra la influenza puede prevenir este virus. Los CDC recomiendan la vacuna para todas las personas que quieran reducir la probabilidad de contraer o contagiar a otros con el virus de la influenza. El evento Sábado de Vacunas Gratis Contra la Influenza (“Free Flu Shot Saturday”) no solamente disminuye el impacto de la influenza en nuestra comunidad, sino que también es el evento principal del Knoxville News Sentinel para recaudar fondos para el “Empty Stocking Fund”, un fondo caritativo que provee 3.600 canastas de comida y juguetes para las personas más necesitadas durante los días festivos.
Se invitan a todas las personas de 4 años en adelante a participar en el Sábado de Vacunas Gratis Contra la Influenza. Aceptamos una contribución monetaria para beneficiar al “Empty Stocking Fund”, pero no es obligatoria para recibir la vacuna.
